Chapter Twenty-three

THE BARN FELT warm after Zeke jogged over from the main residence the next morning. The large thermometer hanging outside the barn read forty-two degrees. She hoped when the sun rose it would warm up. George helped Matt with some hay bales, but other than the sound of restless hooves, the barn was quiet.

Zeke slipped off her denim jacket and hung it by the door. After checking the card to be sure, she grabbed a flake of fresh hay and carried it to Willow’s stall. She was pleased that Willow seemed to recognize her and snorted a greeting.

“Good morning, Willow, time for something to eat.” She dropped the hay into the wire basket inside the door and waited until Willow began to eat before she left for breakfast.

“Hey, good morning, Zeke,” Matt said, walking up to her.

“G’morning, Matt. You must have gotten here early.”

He chuckled. “Yeah, I guess I was kind of excited.”
